Living Phobia Free – Fear of Public Speaking – #10 The stigma of fear

fear of public speaking - overcoming the stigma of fear

There are two subjects, which if discussed at networking events are bound to be met with raised eyebrows and claims of ignorance. They are stress and a fear of public speaking.

The claims of ignorance come in two forms either

“That’s not a problem for me”

Or

“I don’t get it”

So let’s get real and a bit provocative for a moment because someone is probably not being honest with themselves. Statistics show that one in three people suffer from stress for at least a full day per week and three out of four people have a fear of public speaking.

So why are they denied by so many. And by the way this isn’t hypothetical I have tested the responses on your behalf by enduring conversations at networking events over a glass or two of warm white wine.

Deniability is one of the reasons I have a business which focuses on helping people to overcome unnecessary fear, anxiety and stress; I have seen the consequences of chronic and long term worry and fear and it’s not nice, nor need it happen.

The first thing people need in order to change is the awareness that there is a problem, yet many will deny they have a problem out of fear.

  • Fear of being judged

  • Fear of being seen as weak

  • Fear of being found out IMPOSTER SYNDROME

  • Fear of being passed over for promotion

  • Fear of being ignored as opportunities present themselves.

  • Fear of being left behind

  • Fear of regret

  • Fear of success

  • Fear of failure

There is an uncomfortable reality which is most people would rather endure and avoid their fears rather than admitting to them to others. Acknowledge your fears then when you overcome them it will give you an advantage over others; think of it as your market advantage.

You will know more about yourself and how to change then anyone who simply covered their eyes, plugged their ears and shouted la, la, la because they were too blind, deaf and dumb to see, hear or talk about their problem.
